5 Grilling Safety Tips Every Colorado Backyard Chef Should Know

Grilling Dept

If there’s one thing we Coloradans know how to do, it’s enjoy a good backyard cookout. Whether you’re flipping burgers in Golden, slow-smoking ribs in Summit County, or searing steaks in Lakewood, summer grilling is a tradition as strong as our love for powder days and locally brewed beer.

But grilling in the Centennial State comes with its own set of challenges. And no, we’re not just talking about running out of propane halfway through brat night. We’re talking wind, wildfires, and elevation. All things that can turn a peaceful BBQ into a recipe for disaster if you’re not careful.

To help you fire up safely this summer, the team at Colorado Ace pulled together five must-know grilling safety tips, plus some helpful advice straight from our crew in Golden, Green Mountain, and Summit County. Let’s get cookin’!

Tip #1: Check Local Fire Restrictions

First things first: if it’s a high fire danger day, put down the tongs and check for fire bans. Even if you’re using a propane grill, restrictions may apply, especially in dry, windy conditions.

Your Colorado Fire Restriction Cheat Sheet (Grilling Edition):

Here’s what you need to know before your next backyard BBQ:

  • Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:
    • Allowed: Propane, gas, charcoal, and pellet grills are still permitted.
    • Not Allowed: Open fires outside of designated campgrounds or permitted pits.
    • Colorado Ace Tip: Even though grilling is allowed, make sure your setup is stable, well-maintained, and far from anything flammable.
  • Stage 2 Fire Restrictions:
    • Allowed: Only propane or gas grills with an on/off valve (like a shut-off valve) and used at least 3 feet from anything that could catch fire.
    • Not Allowed: Charcoal, wood, or pellet grills. Even if they’re in a fire ring.
    • Colorado Ace Tip: If your grill runs on charcoal or pellets, this is your signal to take a break or switch to gas. Safety trumps smoky flavor during Stage 2.
  • Red Flag Warning:
    • Issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are ripe for fast-spreading fires (think: dry fuels + gusty winds + low humidity).
    • While not a formal restriction, it’s strongly recommended that you postpone grilling, even with propane.
    • Colorado Ace Tip: Just because you can grill doesn’t mean you should. We recommend waiting for safer conditions. It’s a good time to make a list of new recipes to try!
  • City or County Overrides:
    • Some neighborhoods or HOAs may have their own rules. When in doubt, call or check your city or county’s website. Trust us, it’s better than getting fined or worse, causing a fire.

Your Colorado Ace Team Says…

“With our high elevation and dry summer climate, fire danger can rise quickly, especially in Summit County. Even propane grills can pose a risk. Always keep your grill at least 10 feet away from buildings, dry grass, or anything flammable. And check for fire restrictions before lighting up.” — Melinda, Summit County Ace Team

Tip #2: Keep Your Grill Clean (Yes, Even That Nasty Drip Tray)

A greasy grill isn’t just gross, it’s dangerous. Grease fires can erupt faster than your uncle Carl’s temper when the Broncos are losing. Make sure to clean your grill regularly, especially the burners, grates, and drip trays.

Your Colorado Ace Team Says…

“A lot of our Golden customers grill year-round, which means buildup can sneak up on you. Grease, cobwebs, and even small critters can cause problems if you don’t inspect your grill first. Give those burners and drip trays a good clean before your next cookout. It helps your grill last longer and keeps your cook safer.” — Sandy

Tip #3: Grill Placement: It’s All About That Base

Colorado backyards are beautiful, but that mountain charm can come with some hidden hazards. Avoid setting up your grill on grass, near fences, or under trees, especially anything dry or low-hanging. Choose a flat, fire-safe surface like concrete or pavers, and be mindful of the wind. Even a light breeze can carry heat or embers farther than you’d expect.

Your Colorado Ace Team Says…

“Backyards in Lakewood can be beautiful—but tight. Wind is always a wildcard out here, so set up your grill on a flat, fire-safe surface like concrete or pavers, and steer clear of fences, sheds, and overhangs. You’d be surprised how fast a little flame can turn into a big problem on a breezy afternoon.” — Mo, Green Mountain Ace Team

Tip #4: Never Leave a Grill Unattended

Tempted to run inside and catch the score while the chicken’s cooking? Don’t. An unattended grill is a hazard waiting to happen, especially if there are kids, pets, or sudden gusts in the mix.

Pro Tip: Keep a fire extinguisher or a box of baking soda nearby (not water—grease fires and water do not mix). Use long-handled tools and heat-resistant gloves to keep your hands safe and your eyebrows intact.

Tip #5: Store Fuel Properly

Propane tanks should always be stored upright and outside. Never in your garage, shed, or trunk. For charcoal lovers, make sure coals are fully cooled (and we mean stone-cold) before tossing them in a metal container. Even “cool-looking” coals can hold heat for hours. Give them time. It’s not worth risking a garbage fire just because you’re eager to take the trash out.
